  • Toor dhal - 1 cup
  • Onion ( chopped) - 1 no
  • Tamarind paste - 4 tablespoon
  • Garlic (crushed ) - 6-7 cloves
  • Green chilli - 2 no's
  • Red chilli - 3 no's
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves
  • Mustard - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Splitted urad dhall - 1 teaspoon
  • Oil and ghee - 2 tablespoon
  • Asafoetida 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste


  1. In a pressure cooker,cook Toor dhal and mash well. you can even use a mixie to make a smooth paste.
  2. Slice onion ,green chillies.
  3. In a deep pan, add onions, green chillies, curry leaves, Tamarind paste, turmeric powder, salt all in one go add little water .
  4. No need to add oil. Now switch on the stove and boil on high flame for 2minutes.
  5. Now add mashed dhall, Cumin powder and boil for another 5 minutes.
  6. Add 1 cup of water and make thin like rasam. Boil for another 5 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile for seasoning, heat oil and ghee in a pan add mustard, urad dhall, Cumin seeds, fenugreek , crushed garlic, red chillies and hing.
  8. Now add it to the dhal.
  9. Pappu chaaru is ready.Serve it with rice and papad.
  10. VARIATIONS : We can add veggies like brinjal, drumstick and even tomatoes along with onions. Adjust the number of chillies according to taste.

It also has iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium etc., It is high in dietary fiber,low in saturated fat and cholesterol free. It cure cough, poisoning effect, gas troubles, acidity and piles.
